"Never before has the art of flamenco dance been so pulsatingly sensual"

Part of Carlos Saura's dance trilogy (which includes Blood Wedding and El Amor Brujo), Carmen is a film about Georges Bizet’s opera, and about the dancers performing it. Saura and dancer-choreographer Antonio Gades have interweaved the lives of the performers and the lives of the characters, showing in vivid fashion the love, passion, jealousy and violence of Bizet’s piece, blurring the line between reality and fantasy. Supported by some of the best artists of the 80s, dancer Cristina Hoyos and guitarist Paco de Lucía, Saura's Carmen was awarded for its "artistic quality" at the Cannes Festival and was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar ® in 1984.
