In 1970s New York, when many groups were marginalized and excluded from society, a dance-based culture emerged that allowed and encouraged the total freedom of self-expression. But can the city's vibrant subculture continue to thrive after Mayor Giuliani's revival of Prohibition-era Cabaret Laws that strictly regulate dancing? freedom2dance chronicles the long and twisted history of these restrictive laws through the lens of New York City's legendary underground dance community.

Ina Sotirova: Director

Ina Sotirova is a globe-trotting multimedia journalist with a solid background in photography and a passion for world culture and social justice. freedom2dance is her debut as a documentary filmmaker, conceived during her graduate studies at Pulitzer's Columbia University Journalism School in New York City. At the 2013 TEDxBG conference, Ina spoke of dance as a radical force for personal and social transformation – a topic inspired both by her work on the film and her personal experience as an underground dancer.
