A teenage marching band rehearses on a rooftop car park on a Saturday. A flock of crows lie dead in the wind. Three people sit in the back of a car waiting to move.

Motion Sickness is a dance film exploring ideas of need, rejection and escape. The film is a collaboration between award winning choreographer Jessica Kennedy and award winning filmmaker John McIlduff.

 

John McIlduff: Director
John McIlduff is a writer, filmmaker and stage director. He has made films about fighting cows, pear trees and irresponsible parents which have been screened in festivals from Tehran to Clermont Ferrand, directed commercials for well known brands of washing powder and been awarded the Prix de Qualité from the CNC, France. As a writer, he has worked on both opera and soap opera, most recently writing for the French television show Un Meilleur Monde and wrote the words for Postcards from Dumbworld, which had its world premiere at the Belfast Festival 2010 and has been nominated for Best Opera at the Irish Theatre Awards 2010. Along with composer Brian Irvine, he was recently been awarded the Artist’s Taking the Lead commission for Northern Ireland as part of Cultural Olympiad celebrations for London 2012, for the project NEST.

 

Jessica Kennedy: Choreographer
Jessica trained in the United States, Dublin and London, completing her degree in Dance and English Literature at Middlesex University, London. She has performed with various companies in the U.K., Romania, Germany, Holland, Edinburgh and Belgium. In Ireland she has worked with Blast Theory, Myriad Dance, eX Ensemble, Brokentalkers and in productions with The Abbey Theatre, The Ark Theatre and The Pavilion Theatre. She has performed and choreographed for the films Wonder House (JDIFF 2012), Her Mother’s Daughters (Winner Best Actress for cast Capalbio Festival Italy 2011/RTÉ Dance on the Box 2010) and Two Hundred Feet (2009) and also performs in the band, You can call me Frances. She is Co-Artistic Director of junk ensemble, producing multi-award winning shows including The Falling Song (Dublin Dance Festival 2012), Sometimes we break (Tate London commission 2012), Bird with boy (Dublin Theatre Festival 2012/DFF 2011), Five Ways to Drown (Dublin Dance Festival 2010), Pygmalian Revisited (Aix en Provence commission 2010), Drinking Dust (DFF 2008) and The Rain Party (DFF 2007). Jessica was awarded Best Female Performer for Dublin Fringe Festival 2006. Jessica is the Dancer in Residence 2012 for RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre and recently completed the film Motion Sickness as part of her residency (world premier at Dublin Dance Festival 2012).
