Tuesday 5th November, 18.10, Filmhouse

A double bill of documentaries about pioneers in dance, Peter Darrell: Scotland's Dance Pioneer and Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance

Dir: Eleanor Taylor, 2012, 29mins, UK

Peter Darrell was already a successful and groundbreaking choreographer when he became the first artistic director of Scottish Ballet in 1969. He laid the foundations for the company's current success and created a catalogue of ballets that deserve reviving. This film explores what made Darrell's work so innovative and influential with the help of dancer/choreographer Michael Clark, whom he mentored, and Matthew Bourne, the UK's most successful contemporary choreographer whom he inspired.

Dir: Bob Hercules, 2012, 82 mins, UK

This tells the story of the company known as the first truly American dance company. Narrated by Mandy Patinkin, the film documents how The Joffrey Ballet revolutionised American ballet by daringly combining modern dance with traditional ballet technique, combining art with social statement and setting ballets to pop and rock music scores.

Scottish Ballet: Healah Dancing

A study in motion as two Scottish Ballet dancers connect and disconnect; bodies are drawn together, close, intense as these muscular forms ignite. A voyeuristic insight into the physical relationship of dance.
