The Dance Documentary Double Bill

Saturday 9th November, 16.00, Filmhouse

Dance documentaries about the creative process usually take a formulaic approach. Introduce the company/artist, watch them create a piece, experience the trials and tribulation in the run up to the final performance (which you end up not seeing). Movement One is about a company making a dance film and uniquely, you see the full dance film at the end. And Ponydance The Movie? It’s pretty much the same, just not so serious….

MOVEMENT ONE (WORLD PREMIERE)

Dir: Jesse Atlas, 2012, 59mins, USA

A documentary following the creative process of producer/composer Jon Arpino and Emmy-nominated choreographer Teddy Forance as they create an original dance production for film. In just 8 days, 20 dancers collaborated to choreograph, perform and film a 30-minute dance production set to an original score. The film takes viewers into the studio for a unique view of the creative process from choreography to music composition, concluding with the full production.

PONYDANCE: THE MOVIE (UK PREMIERE)

Dir: Derek O’Connor, Ian Whelan, 2013, 26 mins, Ireland

Part documentary, part mockumentary, ponydance: the movie is a kinetic, fly-on-the-wall portrait of the Belfast-based comedic dance company and their choreographer, Leonie McDonagh, as they create their biggest production to date. Comedy is a serious business...
